Posted: February 23, 2017 It’s game time on February 25th, 2017 at our annual Sadie Hawkins dance!
What is the big deal about Sadies, and why should the student body participate in it? Sadies, this year in particular, has a very different theme than in the past three years: EHS Sportscenter. The sophomore class did very well in that it is a theme that will get a very positive reaction from the student body. We are expecting a large participation at Sadie's this year because of the theme, yet it is still up to the students themselves whether they choose to attend the dance, popular theme or not. Does Sadies lose or gain more attention from the students with each year? Sadie Hawkins is the least raved about dance in high school compared to Homecoming and Prom, regardless the theme or hype put towards it. In Student Council, we always try our best to make it something that the student body will want to participate in, by the way we voice the dance out to the student body, and how we present it to them with the posters we make. How does the dance become a possibility? Sadies is put together by the entire Student Council class, but it is lead by the Sophomore class officers and representatives. We do this so that each class has a vital part in every school year by assigning them certain events. Being that the Sophomore class are the leaders of this event, they get first hand at everything that goes into Sadie's: The decorations, the pieces put on the walls, what days the council will be coming in for work days, and the fine details that will make the dance a success. We still incorporate the opinions of every other member in the council so that it is a collective game plan though.

By: Carol-Rose Urrea, Posted February 17, 2017 Millions of people around the world came together on January 21st to raise their voices and march for the protection of women's rights, safety, and health. The women's march was aimed to send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office. Women's rights are human rights, regardless of a woman's race, religion, ethnicity, sexual identity, and immigration status etc. “We represent the powerful forces of change that are determined to prevent the the dying cultures of racism, heteropatriarchy (a socio-political system in which men and the heterosexuality have primacy over other genders and over other sexual orientations.) from rising again.” Civil rights activist Angela Davis said. Millions of people of all genders came together and united as one to support women. The march originated in Washington, D.C. when Rebecca Shook composed a facebook post asking if women can march in Washington during Inauguration Day, the night Donald Trump was elected. In less than 24 hours, the event page Shook had created had more 10,000 people confirmed they will be attending. The word quickly got out about the women's march expanding all over the world and Las Vegas being one of the cities that participated. The march in Las Vegas was held Downtown on Fremont Street. Women, men, and children flooded the Fremont Street parking lot between 9th and 10th, carrying with them hundreds of signs expressing how they feel about the situation. Helen O’Reilly states, “I’ve been marching since 1968, Every generation has some evil come along, and we have to keep fighting it. It doesn’t stop, and we can’t stop fighting. It makes me proud to see everyone here.” The crowd estimated at more than 4,000 people on Fremont, turned south on Las Vegas Boulevard and arrived outside the Lloyd George Federal Courthouse, shouting “Stronger together, we won’t fall justice, peace and equality for all.” The march brought unity for women of all colors and background, and sent a message to those in power.
“I love to play guitar, but I’ve actually only been playing since 9th grade. I just got the urge one day when I was in my room and I’ve been practicing ever since. My inspiration is Ariel Camacho, and I’d love to be like him one day. I am self taught, but hope to be signed with a music label by the time I graduate. I would say right now I am semi-pro and eventually I’ll be a full-on professional.”
By: Zoie Clements, Posted February 14, 2017 Have you ever doubted the things you’ve been told or heard throughout your life? That maybe things aren’t quite as they seem? Then the Conspiracy Theory Club might just be for you!
Senior Dezi Staley is in charge of the club and meetings are held after school on Fridays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in room 212. The club’s main focus is on Celebrity, Illuminati, and Mandela Effect conspiracies. Open discussions are held and fellow club members talk about their thoughts on different conspiracies. What is a conspiracy theory, though? Conspiracy or to conspire means a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful. A theory, in this context, means an idea used to account for a situation or justify a course of action. When put together, a conspiracy theory is an idea that some covert, but influential organization is responsible for a circumstance or event. Some common, but controversial conspiracies include 9/11, the JFK assassination, the reptile elite, moon landing, etc. All of which attempt to explain and provide other evidence for certain events. Most conspiracies are about the government and its involvement in our lives. Many conspiracy theorists believe that the government is trying to condition us for a New World Order controlled by none other than the Illuminati. They also believe that celebrities and politicians are all a part of this elaborate scheme. If you’d like to learn more or if you have some theories of your own, be sure to join Conspiracy Theory Club or see sponsor in room 212. By: Julio sosa, Posted February 14, 2017 Protests at the Mexico-United states border have brought attention to problems shared by many, both in the United States and Mexico. As a result of the large number of protestors, one of the border patrol stations closed down for hours on Sunday, January 22nd. These protesters were against Mexico because of the rise of gas prices. They shut down southbound traffic at the San Diego-Tijuana, San Ysidro crossing. This crossing is the busiest station along the entire 2,000 mile border between Mexico and the United States. "We're exercising our right for free speech," said Brenda Cortez, a 22-year-old college student from Tijuana. "It's to make sure we are noticed."
The Border Protection and California Highway Patrol officers blocked southbound Interstate 5 after Mexican agents abandoned their posts. When demonstrators appeared at the nearby Otay Mesa port of entry, protesters waved signs at passing drivers heading into Mexico. “If the price of gasoline goes up, we’re going to pay more for everything else,” said Iván Rosales, an employee of a trucking company who protested the price spike on Sunday at the iconic Ángel de la Independencia monument in Mexico City. They also managed to shut down a crossing in Nogales, Arizona, according to AP. None of these are related to President Donald Trump’s call for the wall between the United States and Mexico. The price of 1 liter (1/4 gallon) of gas in Mexico City is 15 peso ($0.69), the daily minimum wage is currently 80 pesos (US$3.60). By: Patrick Rivas, Posted February 14, 2017 Both players and fans are getting hyped up as the 2017 All-Star Weekend is around the corner. Prepare to be astonished with flashy dunks, crazy shots, and plays so fancy that they’ll look like magic acts. Don’t forget about all the fun and enjoyment to go around. All-Star Weekend is a can’t-miss event, especially for basketball fans.
The weekend will start with the All-Star celebrity game on February 17th. The rosters have yet to be announced, but it’s exciting to think about who the NBA will recruit for their teams. One potential celebrity the NBA could go for is the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. He’s known for being a sports fan and now that he’s out of office, he’s available to participate in the celebrity game. The Rising Stars challenge will immediately follow the celebrity game. This is a clash between the league’s best rookies and sophomores. The teams are then separated between “World” and “USA”, meaning that foreign born players play for “World” and U.S. born players play for team “USA”. Then on the following night of the 18th, the Skills challenge, 3 point contest, and the slam dunk contest will all commence. There are no confirmed participants for any of these events as of yet. The skills challenge will be the first contest of the night and is a contest of your playmaking ability and ball handling skills between big men and guards. The second event of the night will be the 3 point contest, which is simply a competition between the league’s best sharpshooters to see who can make the most 3 pointers in under a minute. It isn’t confirmed yet but it may be safe to assume that players such as Stephen Curry, J.J. Redick, and Nick Young could participate in this contest. To end the night, the slam dunk contest will take place. The slam dunk contest is a competition between four chosen players to see who can drop jaws with the flashiest dunks. Unfortunately, 2-time slam dunk champion Zach Lavine has stated that he does not plan on taking place in this year’s competition. That doesn’t mean that the contest won’t be filled with can’t miss dunks. As for the main event, the league’s 66th NBA All-Star game will conclude All-Star Weekend on the 19th of February. This is a competition between the league’s most elite players in the Eastern and Western conferences. The East will have Lebron James, Jimmy Butler, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kyrie Irving, and Demar Derozan to start off the game. In the West, they have Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Anthony Davis. The All-Star game is always a fun game to both watch and play. Because of the lack of defense by the players, flashy playmaking isn’t a rare occurrence in the game. They never fail to wow the crowd. During the voting period, a bizarre event took place. A player by the name of Zaza Pachulia had gained over 1.5 million fan votes for the All-Star game. This caused an uproar for those that didn’t vote for him, They believed he shouldn’t be in the game because he only averages 5 points and 5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Carlos Rosas thinks that Zaza is a cool guy but thinks that him being in the All-Star game would’ve been weird. There have been plenty of All-Star snubs this year including, Portland Trailblazers point guard Damian Lillard, not making the team. When Carlos was asked he stated, “Russell Westbrook was the biggest snub for not starting in the All-Star game. The man is out there, playing his heart out, and is even averaging a triple double!”. Carlos’ favorite event is the 3 point contest. He says that it’s always interesting to watch. His favorite moments from last year’s event were watching Kobe Bryant’s tribute videos for his final All-Star game and seeing the chemistry between Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook throughout the game. When asked who he thinks would win this year’s game, Carlos said that the West will win simply because of the fact that he believes the West has better players. Be sure to tune in to watch all the events from February 17th through the 19th! You won’t want to miss any of it. The All-Star Weekend is one of the most exciting parts of the NBA. I’m already feeling the excited for the event myself! By: Angelise Olvera, Julio Sosa, Posted February 14,2017 Eldorado High School is full of talented, interesting, and important people.
