Love is in the air, chocolates and teddy bears are stocked on shelves, and red paper cut-outs of hearts scattered all over the floor can only mean one thing. February is not just any other month, it is when Valentine's day is celebrated. This is usually the time when people all around the world express their feelings for another person, or just a time celebrated by those already in relationships. This has become the new Valentine’s day tradition in the United States, but it wasn't always like that. The very first Valentine's Day was in the year of 496. Having a particular Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, believed to have originated from a Roman festival. The Romans used to have a festival called "Lupercalia" in the middle of February which is the official start of their springtime. It is also the month we celebrate Valentine's Day! This year's Valentine's day will be extraordinarily special because it’s going to be the first one of the new decade. It is an exciting day for many because it’s an acceptable excuse to express your affections for that special someone, or just be a really great friend. A way of letting someone know you care about them is splurging hundreds of dollars on getting them fun over-sized teddy bears! It’s also hard to go wrong with chocolates inside of a heart shaped container. On this day, kids usually have a small celebration in their class where they bring and exchange clever little Valentine’s day cards. They also pass out sugary treats such as: pop-tarts, candy, and cupcakes. etc. As kids grow up, they may celebrate with significant others or take part in celebrations such as Galentine’s instead. While celebrating Valentine’s day, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s a special day dedicated to loved ones. It’s ok to be cheesy, or to go the extra mile to make them feel special.

Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the sport. Unfortunately the world lost Kobe on January 26, 2020, in Calabasas, CA. Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven other people died in a helicopter crash while on the way to a youth basketball tournament. He played his entire 20-season professional career in the league with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, was named the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and was a two-time NBA Finals MVP winner. Kobe had one of the best NBA careers ever seen. A night before his death Lebron James passed Kobe for the No.3 spot on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Bryant returned in time for the start of the 2015-2016 NBA season, he personally struggled alongside his young Lakers teammates. In November 2015, he announced that he would retire at the end of the season. Kobe had given his all to the NBA and achieved many things, but his body couldn't handle it any more. Kobe Bryant was also a family man. He was married to Vanessa Laine Bryant for more than 19 years. Kobe and Vanessa had 4 kids together and they were all girls. One of the four girls was traveling with her dad the day of the accident. For the rest of their lives they will have to live without their Dad and husband. The world will always remember Kobe Bryant as one of the greatest basketball players and also as a great human being. By: Freddy Eubanks
NOTE: Opinions stated int the article are of the author and do not represent the opinions of the School or journalism program. Numerous members of the music industry have died over the course of the last few years. Artists have died from many causes ranging from addiction to gun violence. Regardless of the cause it looks like artists are the main targets of death. I can't come up with a reason for that no one can. It is just a cycle of death that won't stop. Several rappers have died of drug overdose or complications due to overdosing. Take for example Fredo Santana, a rapper who died at the age of 27 on January 19, 2018. He was addicted to the drink called lean and regularly mentioned the substance when rapping. After some research, I can only assume he was addicted to the way lean had given him a feeling of euphoria. Another rapper that recently passed at the age of 21 is Juice World. Fans will notice he talks about depression, heartbreak, and drugs in almost all of his songs. For example, his song “Black & White” has depressing lyrics such as, "I know these perkys finna hurt me". His emotional songs show that he was depressed, and used drugs to numb himself. When he landed from a flight, the police were waiting for him, so he took about 30 Percocets that took his life. The only thing I have to say about this is that I don't think he accidentally took his life. He may have seen the police and decided that a life in jail wasn’t how he wanted to live. Continuing the list, Lil Peep and Mac Miller were two rappers who were affiliated with taking drugs. Starting with Lil Peep, who was similar to Juice World, he was depressed and used drugs to numb his depression. On November 15, 2017, Lil Peep took laced Xanax pills and died in his tour bus at the age of 21. Moving over to Mac Miller, another rapper that also battled with depression and addiction, he also bought laced drugs and accidentally died on the date of September 7, 2018. It's well known that rappers have died from drug abuse, but that isn't the only way well known rappers have died. Take XXXTentacion for example on the date of June 18, 2018, he died at the age of 20 years old. He was known to be a bit of a reckless person who would always fight for his things if someone tried to take them. In fact, one time he had a misunderstanding with a fan that he thought was trying to take his chain while he was performing on stage he hit them in their face. Before his untimely death, he moved past that and wanted to help the world. On the day of his death, he was going to do a charity event and decided to buy a motorcycle. His killers watched him in the shop, and waited for him to leave when they tried to rob him. XXXTENTACION put up a fight and it got him killed. His killers took his Louis Vuitton bag with fifty thousand dollars.Last rapper to talk about is Nipsey Hussle. He was outside his shop when he was shot. He died at the age of 33, on March 31st, 2019. Now with all this information, we can both come to the conclusion that rappers and music artists die because of their lifestyle, money, and lastly their depression and their urge to numb it. This year's Super Bowl will be held on February 2nd, 2020, making it the 54th annual game. The two teams that are going head-to-head will be the Kansas City Chiefs, and the San Francisco 49ers. The two famous teams will kick off their game in Miami Gardens, Florida. The 49ers have won five Super Bowl titles (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1995).They will be looking to get their 6th Super Bowl. The 49ers' five championships put them right behind the Patriots and Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in NFL history. The last time the 49ers reached the sport's biggest stage was in 2013 when they lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens. However, things aren't looking so bad for this team. On Sunday, QB Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers clinched their seventh Super Bowl berth in a 37-20 NFC Championship victory over the Green Bay Packers. The Kansas City Chiefs will appear in the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. The Chiefs have only been to the big stage twice, and this being their third appearance. In their last game, they defeated the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969.The Chiefs ranked behind only the Detroit Lions and the New York Jets for the longest Super Bowl drought in the NFL, before clinching their spot to the Super Bowl. Now the Kansas City Chiefs will look to win their second Super Bowl. Armando Torres, 11, is a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and his hoping that they win. He is a very big fan of Patrick Mahomes that's why he fell in love with Kansas city. Armando predicts Kansas will win 28-14. Christopher Lopez, 11, on the other hand, is a fan of the 49ers. He likes the 49ers because of their playing style, and the players they have. Christopher predicts the 49ers will win 37-21.This Super Bowl can go either way, both teams are capable of winning the game. By: Jazmin Antinew
A lot of zoos and aquariums have been shut down by the government due to ethical reasons. Animals have been caged for people’s entertainment. As time has passed, people have become aware about how these animals are being treated and are taking action. Zoos prevent the animals from doing many natural things to their full extent like roaming around, flying, climbing and most of all being with their own kind of species. There are lots of animals that were killed due to captivity. An example is “Lolong”, a giant saltwater crocodile that was certified by the Guinness World Records as the biggest crocodile, died because of sickness. The tiny closure and very shallow pond caused the crocodile to endure stress that stopped eating a month before its death according to Rappler.com. It is a pity that animals like these that are not treated properly. Imagine what more animals out there that are captive and have encountered experiences like “Lolong”. Freedom is important to us humans, but also to animals; animals belong in the wild and not in cages. Like humans, animals too can have behavioral problems. A well known disorder called Zoochosis is the repetitive, disturbed behaviors that animals do in zoos. It’s said that it is similar to OCD such as bar biting, swaying, pacing, neck twisting, excessive grooming, vomiting and more which is stated by the Statesman. In zoos, lions spend 48% of their time pacing, a commonly noticed indication of behavioral problem. This shows that animals not only suffer physically, but also mentally. Wild animals in zoos die earlier rather than in the wild, due to isolation, and animals have limited space to move around. Most wild animals are chained in place and receive little exercise. They frequently become depressed and overweight making them unhealthy. For example, elephants in captivity die 40 years younger than elephants in the wild who can live up to 60-70 years according to One Green Planet. It’s ironic how people complain that animals are becoming extinct when we are also affecting their existence. The government did the right thing by closing the zoos. Animals are living creatures and not toys for anyone’s entertainment. Just like humans, they should have the right to be free. By: Damaso A. Rosales, Amore D. Scranton, and Jessica Reese

Cursive writing has been around since back in the late 1700’s, and while in the past it was a mandatory part of the curriculum, in recent years it has been taught less and less. Schools no longer require it. ENews has deemed cursive writing “a big, old waste of time”, and we no longer need it “because computers”. Cursive writing is a major part of our history, many important documents that shaped our country being written in cursive. The Declaration of Independence, Bill Of Rights, and the Constitution are a few documents written in cursive, and children growing up won’t be able to read them because they can’t understand it. Bateman, a 73-year-old state representative from Idaho says, “The Constitution of the United States is written in cursive. Think about that.” To which ENews responded, “The Constitution is also available online, typed out. Not in cursive. So… we’re good.” Computers are handy to have and to use, but they should not rule over society and make it so we brush history off like it’s worth nothing. Most teens today don’t know cursive, and I am one of them. I know how to sign my name, and read a couple of words here and there, but everything else is a whole other language to me. That’s another thing, adults in the future won’t have a signature when signing important things, and will simply put their normally written name. I believe that cursive writing may be lost within the next few decades, and I truly hope it won’t be. It’s a large part of our history, and it shouldn't be forgotten. It helps children’s brains to develop in their early years, helps kids with dyslexia, and working with legal documents. Early years are a crucial time in a child’s life, and if cursive helps their brain to develop further we should use that to our advantage to help them. Short Story By Joshua S. Olsen Some were excited for kindergarten, some wouldn’t let go of their mom’s leg. We started to learn. ABC, 123, grapes are purple, sticking play-doh up our nose is bad. All the important stuff. We wanted this to last, because, for some, crayons were still meant for the mouth. The next five years were the same. Adding, subtracting, finding theme, learning a bad word, making BFFs. Eventually we made it to the top, 5th grade; only to find that we would be sent to the bottom. Middle school. This was when school got hard for us who actually did our work. Negative numbers, negligible teachers, abhorred enemies and still theme. As if it wasn’t bad enough, they threw in puberty. Nonetheless we made it to the end again, and then back to the beginning. Fresh-meat they called us. Some made it big with sports, others stayed small. Most paired off with the popular hot girl or that shy boy. Others of us became a single pringle. Sophomores were softies. School hadn’t changed; we either had an F and were cool, or an A and were a nerd. Junior was the hardest year. ACT, AP, break-ups, make-ups, food, sleep, repeat. Senioritis kicked in for those of us who hadn’t found it Freshmen year. Finally we made it to Senior; free periods and top of the world. But we were still stuck with theme. Senior Sunrise, Letterman Jacket, Class Rings, Senior Sunset. Tears are shed, goodbyes are made, graduation happens, and now your back at the bottom. Here we come, college. So, maybe it wasn’t a musical, maybe it wasn’t always happy, but we tried, and we made it. Was it worth it? Probably not. But now we’re done; now we can move on. Our whole life is ahead of us. And to think it all started with nap time in kindergarten. By: Damaso A. Rosales
IT Chapter Two is a part two of IT Chapter One, people have said chapter two was even better. Chapter Two will connect with the same idea, but actors and movie scenes will be flipped. The movie falls into the genres of horror, mystery, and supernatural. The film hours came out to be two hours and 49 minutes, and is rated a 7. The movie was made by screenwriter Gary Dauberman and Director Andy Muschietti. It Chapter Two is a bit confusing at the start as it doesn't draw clear lines connecting the younger actors to the older ones. Then they start reuniting, and experiencing flashbacks and Pennywise attacks actually succeed at making our lovable actors come together more like a family. The lighting and effects were awesome. For example, during a scene where little girl went under the bleachers, she saw Pennywise and the director was able to have the setting very dark, but still have the two characters clearly visible. All though the movie had some minor mistakes, like the way the characters are introduced, it was still a great movie to watch. I would recommend this movie if you like mysteries, and horror. The movie should be watched from ages 7+, but they should have a guardian with them because they can still get scared and react differently. Ages 16+ should be allowed to watch the movie without a guardian because there at the phase where there entering adulthood. In my opinion I would give this movie a 8/10 even if they had confusing scenes, they still had great content to give there audience with great movie scenes that will make you laugh and maybe even scream. |
