Love is in the air, chocolates and teddy bears are stocked on shelves, and red paper cut-outs of hearts scattered all over the floor can only mean one thing. February is not just any other month, it is when Valentine's day is celebrated. This is usually the time when people all around the world express their feelings for another person, or just a time celebrated by those already in relationships. This has become the new Valentine’s day tradition in the United States, but it wasn't always like that. The very first Valentine's Day was in the year of 496. Having a particular Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, believed to have originated from a Roman festival. The Romans used to have a festival called "Lupercalia" in the middle of February which is the official start of their springtime. It is also the month we celebrate Valentine's Day! This year's Valentine's day will be extraordinarily special because it’s going to be the first one of the new decade. It is an exciting day for many because it’s an acceptable excuse to express your affections for that special someone, or just be a really great friend. A way of letting someone know you care about them is splurging hundreds of dollars on getting them fun over-sized teddy bears! It’s also hard to go wrong with chocolates inside of a heart shaped container. On this day, kids usually have a small celebration in their class where they bring and exchange clever little Valentine’s day cards. They also pass out sugary treats such as: pop-tarts, candy, and cupcakes. etc. As kids grow up, they may celebrate with significant others or take part in celebrations such as Galentine’s instead. While celebrating Valentine’s day, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s a special day dedicated to loved ones. It’s ok to be cheesy, or to go the extra mile to make them feel special.

Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the sport. Unfortunately the world lost Kobe on January 26, 2020, in Calabasas, CA. Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven other people died in a helicopter crash while on the way to a youth basketball tournament. He played his entire 20-season professional career in the league with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, was named the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and was a two-time NBA Finals MVP winner. Kobe had one of the best NBA careers ever seen. A night before his death Lebron James passed Kobe for the No.3 spot on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Bryant returned in time for the start of the 2015-2016 NBA season, he personally struggled alongside his young Lakers teammates. In November 2015, he announced that he would retire at the end of the season. Kobe had given his all to the NBA and achieved many things, but his body couldn't handle it any more. Kobe Bryant was also a family man. He was married to Vanessa Laine Bryant for more than 19 years. Kobe and Vanessa had 4 kids together and they were all girls. One of the four girls was traveling with her dad the day of the accident. For the rest of their lives they will have to live without their Dad and husband. The world will always remember Kobe Bryant as one of the greatest basketball players and also as a great human being. By: Freddy Eubanks
NOTE: Opinions stated int the article are of the author and do not represent the opinions of the School or journalism program. Numerous members of the music industry have died over the course of the last few years. Artists have died from many causes ranging from addiction to gun violence. Regardless of the cause it looks like artists are the main targets of death. I can't come up with a reason for that no one can. It is just a cycle of death that won't stop. Several rappers have died of drug overdose or complications due to overdosing. Take for example Fredo Santana, a rapper who died at the age of 27 on January 19, 2018. He was addicted to the drink called lean and regularly mentioned the substance when rapping. After some research, I can only assume he was addicted to the way lean had given him a feeling of euphoria. Another rapper that recently passed at the age of 21 is Juice World. Fans will notice he talks about depression, heartbreak, and drugs in almost all of his songs. For example, his song “Black & White” has depressing lyrics such as, "I know these perkys finna hurt me". His emotional songs show that he was depressed, and used drugs to numb himself. When he landed from a flight, the police were waiting for him, so he took about 30 Percocets that took his life. The only thing I have to say about this is that I don't think he accidentally took his life. He may have seen the police and decided that a life in jail wasn’t how he wanted to live. Continuing the list, Lil Peep and Mac Miller were two rappers who were affiliated with taking drugs. Starting with Lil Peep, who was similar to Juice World, he was depressed and used drugs to numb his depression. On November 15, 2017, Lil Peep took laced Xanax pills and died in his tour bus at the age of 21. Moving over to Mac Miller, another rapper that also battled with depression and addiction, he also bought laced drugs and accidentally died on the date of September 7, 2018. It's well known that rappers have died from drug abuse, but that isn't the only way well known rappers have died. Take XXXTentacion for example on the date of June 18, 2018, he died at the age of 20 years old. He was known to be a bit of a reckless person who would always fight for his things if someone tried to take them. In fact, one time he had a misunderstanding with a fan that he thought was trying to take his chain while he was performing on stage he hit them in their face. Before his untimely death, he moved past that and wanted to help the world. On the day of his death, he was going to do a charity event and decided to buy a motorcycle. His killers watched him in the shop, and waited for him to leave when they tried to rob him. XXXTENTACION put up a fight and it got him killed. His killers took his Louis Vuitton bag with fifty thousand dollars.Last rapper to talk about is Nipsey Hussle. He was outside his shop when he was shot. He died at the age of 33, on March 31st, 2019. Now with all this information, we can both come to the conclusion that rappers and music artists die because of their lifestyle, money, and lastly their depression and their urge to numb it. |
