By: Zoie Clements, Posted: March 30, 2017 If you are a person with a nose, then at one point or another you’ve probably experienced the horrible and disgusting annoyance that is allergy season.
Around this time of year, you constantly hear people say, “It's allergy season!” but why is this so called “allergy season?” Allergy season is most commonly referred to the time between January and early June. Depending on where you live this may be longer, shorter, or for some poor folk, year round. Now of course anyone can be allergic to anything, however, what's interesting about this time of year is the cause of allergies many experience, pollen. Pollen from just about anything too! Trees, grasses, and flowers are all big contributors, and with so much variety there's something different for everyone. People may confuse allergies with the seasonal cold. Chances are high that it may just be hay fever (the more technical term for pollen allergies). Symptoms of hay fever include itchy eyes, stuffy and/or runny nose, sinus infections, headaches, etc. the list goes on. Even some of the best medicine may not always make you feel better, but you're not alone! Over 67 million Americans are affected by allergies each year. Senior Nathan Stokes states, “I hate allergy season! If I'm not sneezing and fighting a pounding headache, I'm constantly having to blow my nose and cannot smell.” Unfortunately here in Las Vegas, we're marked number three on the list of worst cities for allergy sufferers in the U.S. Second being Yuma, Arizona and first being Prescott, Arizona. The hotter and drier the climate, the worse it'll be for your nose. Of course you can't blame your body for reacting this way, as with any human ailment it's just your body's way of protecting you... If only they knew when to stop! By: Zirlei Rosales, Posted: March 30, 2017 Upcoming artist Khalid drops his first album titled American Teen and has everyone on their feet.
18 year old Khalid Robinson is an up-and-coming R&B artist out of El Paso, Texas. Khalid bursted onto the scene after Kylie Jenner featured his single “Location” in one of her social medias. His previously released singles “Coaster”, “Saved”, and “Lets Go” also made it onto his debut album, American Teen on March 3rd, 2017. Khalids inspiration for the album was love and heartbreak. He states, “Once you're in that of a fresh breakup or you're splitting with whoever, it always seems that, then and there, is the hardest part, because the feeling, the emotions are raw and that increases the time. You look back at things that will hurt you. I feel like I was going through that a long time until I stopped going through it. I realized it was a short part of my life, but it still hits me as if it was a long part of my life.” Khalid also says that his mother is his biggest musical inspiration. Born on February 11, 1998 in Fort Stewart, Georgia, he spent his childhood in various locations because of his mother's career in the military. His mother worked as a supply technician for over 10 years. Over time, she got the opportunity to sing in the U.S. Army band. Khalid sold out every venue on his 21-city “Location Tour”. He is scheduled to perform next on Wednesday March 29th in Minneapolis. On the first week of February, Apple Music named Khalid its first artist of the week. His take on beats and melodies deliver a calming and positive vibe, something a lot of people seem to enjoy. It is safe to say that we haven't seen all of what this young, bright and talented artist has to offer. By: Brennan Robinson, Posted March 2, 2017 The month of February is commemorated as Black History Month. Black History Month was first known as “Negro History week”, created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African-American historian. February was chosen to coincide with birthdays of Abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. February 12, 1909 was chosen because it was the centennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.
During the early 1900’s, racial riots and violence occurred because of racial conflicts that have aroused. In Springfield, Illinois, 1908, a group of African American leaders came together to create a new permanent civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Since then, conflicts have occurred that have shown the struggle in the African-American community. The issues have also affected rappers and artists such as rapper Kendrick Lamar. His song “Alright” in 2015 was a dedication to the death of Trayvon Martin. Kendrick even performed the song at the 2015 BET awards on top of a police car. This was highlighting the songs purpose as a protest against police brutality. Although protests have taken place against police officers in the African-American community, these problems have been around for centuries. In the early 1600’s, slavery in America began. The first African slaves were brought to the northern colony of Jamestown, Virginia. They were brought over to help aid production of crops and work hard labor. Slavery was abolished by the thirteenth amendment, which was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865. Today we look back at the hardships faced by many and appreciate the change that has come to the United States of America. By: Garrison Gavin, Posted March 2, 2017 As the 2016-17 baseball season draws to a start the Varsity players are hard at work preparing to achieve a goal every team dreams of accomplishing, the state title. With one goal in mind, the team looks to start their journey of making it to the state championship and hopefully winning.
The Sun Devils will host an invitational tournament to kick off the season. The following week Eldorado will play the Green Valley Gators for the first league game of the season. Jordan Eldred and key senior, Tony Sanchez hope to lead the Sun Devil towards a winning season and hopefully the state championship. After losing to the Foothill Falcons in a scrimmage game last Thursday, the baseball team sees a promising season ahead. Even though they suffered a loss the team worked together and had a good game. Jordan pitched 5 innings and only gave up two earned runs and one unearned run. Varsity player Tony Sanchez was good at bat with a double in the fourth inning to start a rally for the devils. “My prediction after seeing the teamwork and leadership from the shows, we have a chance to go to playoffs and be a key team this year.” Said Varsity catcher Tony Sanchez. The last time the Sun Devils made the playoffs was in 2012. Varsity Coach Jesse Medellin hopes to change that for the baseball team this year. However, Eldorado’s last win at the state championship was in 1990, almost 30 years ago. This season, the goal is to add another state title for the school. “Our chances of going to playoffs this year are very high as our team has been working hard in practice which was shown during the foothill scrimmage.” Stated Jordan Eldred. By: Marcos Urrabazo, Posted March 3, 2017 The inspirational Martin Garrix has become a world renowned DJ this year. Martin went from nothing to something over the past years and has made it big in the DJ community.
On October 19, 2016, Martin Garrix became the number one DJ and is one of the youngest recipients of this position at the age of twenty. Other amazing DJs are trying to create better and more creative content to beat Martin for next year’s pick of the number one DJ award. Martin Garrix has won multiple awards through DJawards.com via votes from the listeners. As of 2013 he won awards such as “DJ of the year”, “Newcomer of the year” and “Best Electro/ Progressive Track”. From 2013 to 2016, he has been awarded 13 awards. This is a great accomplishment for him and his supporting fans, who voted in his favor. Martin never had to run a campaign to put himself out there. Once he started to DJ, the knowledge he gained from school helped him in the music industry. This gave him the skills he needed to have about contracts and the business side of things. Not only that, but it also helped him with interviews and how to deal with media. There is a lot to say about this young and talented DJ but there is sure to be more creative content and awards coming his way. A Prayer to the Goddess
