By: Allyson Swapp, Posted: May 19, 2017 On the road to royalty, you expect to become the prom queen of king right? This year's queen is none other than Jocelyn Alvarez. She was nominated by her Stuco class, and later won by majority vote. She wasn’t one for crowds, but she said, “It felt nice to have the attention that night.” Adrian Nunez, the Prom King, had the same nomination and is good friends with the queen. He mentioned how he liked Prom and that it was a fun experience.
Being in Student Council gave both the king and queen a bit of a upvote as they would help around the school. “Everyone I've come across in my life are important” said Jocelyn when she was asked what was meaningful to her about high school. She states, “I grew as a person while meeting new people, some have even taught me more. I am is a honor student and i'm even in journalism. I am an A-B honors student and have been learning a lot.” They would both love to remember that night and all the amazing memories they've made with their fellow classmates. They liked high school and will reminisce their time here at school as a good time. By: Patrick Rivas, Posted May 19, 2017 This past weekend, our theatre club held a performance on the famous play, Romeo and Juliet. In this play, there was actual sword fighting - with actual swords - and kissing! That’s something that I’ve never seen in a play before.
Oliver Ribera, 10, played as the main character, Romeo Montague. Oliver states, “I just really love theatre and the attention that comes with it, so playing as Romeo was perfect for me.” Romeo and Juliet is a very common play, so I was wondering what made them decide to do a play on that story. “We want people to be more into Shakespeare, and this is a well known play, so we decided to go with it.” Oliver says the theatre decided to add sword fighting because advanced students were taking combat training course so they decided to add it in to make things more interesting for both the audience and the actors. A real kiss was exchanged from Romeo to Juliet. Oliver says, “Actually kissing was awkward at first, but eventually I got used to it. Being actual friends with Juliet helped out in the situation.” I also interviewed Lauren Hamilton, who played as Juliet in the play. After asking what the most exciting play she had participated in was, she states, “it was The Wizard of Oz. Musicals are really big and require a lot of singing and dancing to go along with acting, so that’s why I liked it.” Regarding the kiss, Lauren said, “It was weird at first, but it’s just acting, so no big deal. Plus, Oliver and I are friends, so that helped me feel not as nervous about it.” Lauren was also questioned on her decision to play as Juliet, and she said, “Juliet is an interesting character and is one my favorites from the cast. She has a lot going on and is supposed to be this collective person.” All in all, the play was an amazing success. We are excited to see what the theater program has in store for us next. By: Zirlei Rosales, Posted: May 15, 2017 As we wind down the 2016-2017 school year, students stressfully rush to remember everything they've learned throughout the year before testing began. As of this year, End of Course exams are being administered through the CCSD School District, taking the place of the high school proficiencies. During this time, the graduating classes of 2017 and 2018 are expected to take the EOCs but do not need to pass them. The scores from 2017/2018 students is meant to set the cut score for future years. The class of 2019 is the first class required to receive a passing score on these tests in order to graduate. The class of 2020 and all classes following are required to pass the ELA combined End of Course and Science End of Course assessments along with two math assessments.
For us Eldorado students, testing schedule begins May 11, 2017 and lasts up until May 26, 2017. On these days, all students have two classes per day. Each class was scheduled to test on different dates. As students prepare themselves for the tests, tensions are running high Emily Orellana,10 stated, “I felt that the end of course exams were difficult. To better prepare myself, I paid more attention in class, studied more often and also prepared myself both mentally and physically.” Sophomore Mauricia Robinson stated, “the End of Course exams had me super stressed. I felt like I was not fully prepared weeks before the exams began. I felt better the days of testing because I studied hard in hopes of receiving a passing score.” It's safe to say that the stress was on these past weeks, and that's not the end of it. Best of wishes to everyone receiving their scores of the EOC’s and everyone who is taking that next step in their lives. Cheerleaders are the best way to incorporate school spirit and create enthusiasm at sporting events. This year the school will be reinstating their cheer leading team after having a one-year hiatus. The dance team replaced the cheerleaders at pep rallies, assemblies, and sporting events. However, next school year the cheer leading team will go back to encouraging school spirit at all these events.
Tryouts for the varsity team have taken place and the new team has been created. Some returning cheerleaders are ready to get back into the action. All the cheerleaders are excited to bring back the team and once again be able to represent the school. “I am so excited to bring the team back” Says, sophomore cheerleader Saiyon Stone. Her goals for next school year are to work on her backflip, be the best, and work hard for success. Tajane Davis would like to get her moves sharper, learn all the cheers, and she states that “whatever happens, happens” Tajane would like to leave a legacy for Eldorado as well as tall the other cheerleaders. Some obstacles the team would have to overcome are working together as a brand new team and having to start over with everything. In total there are 19 cheerleaders that will be on the Varsity team showing off their cheers, tumbling routines, and their talent. The cheer coach Ms. Frost hopes to eventually have the team compete in National events, but for now they will compete in State competitions.Ms.Frost will also promote school spirit by including school citizenship within the cheer team. Overall the school, administration, and all the new cheerleaders are very excited to be able to have a cheer team once again. Everyone hopes for the best for this new team and expect a big difference in school spirit during the next school year. Written by Zoie Clements, photo by Allyson Swapp To commemorate Nevada Law Day, Ms. Griffin, 12th grade Government teacher, invited a Nevadan, Public Defender, Alex Hubert, to speak to her students. He described his job in great detail and even shared some personal experience of his own. “Basically, I’ll defend anyone in Nevada who doesn’t have a lawyer.” stated Mr. Hubert. “The government essentially assigns me each of my cases and I try to defend them as best I can.” During his talk, a student asked Mr.Hubert if he had ever had to represent someone that he knew was guilty. This was his response, “I have definitely had that happen before. It can be hard, but everyone has the right to be able to defend themselves and it’s jobs like mine that help ensure that.” Shakayzzia Hunt, 12th grade, said “ I thought he was interesting, I learned things about laws that I didn’t know before. The cases he talked about shocked me. I didn’t know people our age were capable of that.” One of the stories he told the students involved a young man and two young women. In this case, Hubert represented a young man, 17, who allegedly shot and nearly severed his girlfriend’s arm as she attempted to prevent him from harming his ex-girlfriend. Both of the young women stood as witnesses in court and after ten hours of jury discussion he was found guilty. The job of a public defender is very different than that of a commercial lawyer. They are a lawyer that is at the expense of the public in a criminal trial. If you commit a crime, but can’t afford to pay a lawyer, you will be given a public defender. Public defenders are necessary to support the human right to a fast and speedy trial. With a separation between public defenders and the prosecution, it ensures the accused will have a fair, unbiased trial. Eldorado’s High School Seniors were very grateful to hear from Mr. Hubert and what he had to say. Helping them to understand their rights and hear his real world experiences brings them that much closer to preparedness into the real world. Posted May 2, 2017 The Eldorado art club recently held an art contest displaying the talent found within Eldorado. Here are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. First place winner, Payton Eads Tie for Second Place, Jorge Vazquez Tie for Second Place, Ryan Tapia Third Place, Anthony Orenelas
