In 1975, the student council decided they wanted something to represent the annual game between Eldorado and it's rival Chaparral. While it could not be confirmed, the 1976 yearbook claimed that the cleat had been the Student Body President Pete Shields’ “brain child”. 45 years later, Pete’s “brain child” has been bronzed and continues to be the symbol of the game now recognized as one of the “most competitive rivalries in Vegas”, according to the Las Vegas Sun. After an inspirational speech by Steve Jackson, a Sun Devil graduate who went on to play professional football, the football team and the students were excited for the annual Cleat Game. With the whole school chanting at them to “bring back the cleat”, Eldorado went out to Chaparral fields with a new determination. While they came home empty handed, many students reported that it had been an entertaining game and it was clear both teams were trying their best. Sun Devils were not the only ones who notice this new confidence, even Chaparral’s own football coach, Coach Don Willis, commented on their new livelyhood. He told reporters at the Las Vegas Sun that he saw how hard Eldorado was playing and, “How much [Eldorado] wanted [to win].” At the end of the night, the score was 21-13, and while it may not appear as an achievement, it's the closet the team has gotten to winning in the last three years. The football team didn’t win the cleat, instead they brought a new sense of hope that the cleat will call Eldo it’s home next year.

My advice for all you incoming Freshman coming into Journalism Class for the 2018-19 year is to always try to have your work in on or before the deadline or due dates. If you are going to goof around, make sure you have all of your work done. Take the notes Ms.Carranza gives you at the start of the school year. They’re going to be useful for you later on. Do the best you can to make sure you don’t have any missing work. The reason you need to keep up with the deadlines of your work is because you don’t want to fall behind. Even though Journalism is just an elective, it is still a credit you’re going to need in order to graduate. Also, you don’t want to put unnecessary stress on yourself when your trying to get caught up, especially if you have other more important classes to worry about. Meeting deadlines is crucial not only in this class, but almost every other class when your in high school. Another thing to be successful in this class is taking and keeping the notes she gives you at the start of the school year. This is because you’re going to need them when she has you start writing articles around October. The notes are also useful in the other classes you have because they teach you a lot about how to write correctly using commas, sentence structures, and other things many of us struggle with. Last but not least, make sure you complete any missing/late work. Like I said before, protect your work at all times. You don’t want to dig yourself into a hole. If you want to be in sports or other activities, they’re going to look at all your grades. This is an easy class with simple work, so it should be easy for you to keep up. Being productive in class prevents a lot of future stress. If you want to be successful in this class you should follow these rules. Respect and know and get work in for the deadlines. Keep and try the best you can to memorize the notes she gives you in the beginning of the year. Also, last but not least, always keep in mind to never have any late or missing work. By: Jorge Paz
My favorite memories would be of meeting all the people that I have become friends with throughout the year. These people have influenced me extremely on how I grew as a person, what I want to do, and the people in journalism were especially significant to me. I honestly can't stand people for too long, and I abandon people quickly when I start to hate the way they are. However, the people I met this year had exciting, and captivating personalities. I remember the time that the majority of people were shipping Adam and I together. Oddly enough, I really liked being included in something. However, the ships did change over time, and as of now I’ve been shipped with George. George is now my husband, and our lovely daughter is Tabatha, one of my original shippers. My teachers have been really supportive, and I had someone to talk to whenever I had personal issues arise in my life. Ms.Carranza helped me an enormous amount when the conflict with my brother was happening. At first, we thought it was just him being rebellious, but eventually he decided to aid in breaking into somebody's home. He was put on home management, then he ran away again. He was caught getting high, and he was also caught because a 12 year old had stolen her mother's car. The judge went super easy on him, and he was released with an ankle bracelet, but he ended up cutting it off. My mother then had the stress of having to pay over $1000 dollars because the bracelet went missing. I would always try to avoid people in middle school, and half of high school. It was only this year and around the end of the last school year that I loved to get attention from certain people. I still wish I was able to experience all this earlier in life, but I am happy about how this year played out. Sadly, this will be my last year of school. Everything I’ve experienced for my 15 years of school may feel as though they are an insignificant part of my life. Although, in all honesty, they will probably be the most important years in my life. By: Jessica Fajardo
Leaving middle school is a big step, but entering high school is an even bigger step. Compared to middle school, high school is very different. The campus is much larger, the amount of students is enormous, and the coursework is a lot harder. High school is like a roller coaster, and there is no denying that. So, you need to be prepared for it, and who better to help you than someone who’s about to graduate? There are many things I wish I knew when entering high school, and now that know them, I am going to share some of my high school wisdom with you. One of the biggest pieces of advice that I can give you, is to memorize your classes and the campus as quickly as you can. It’s no fun running around like a lost puppy, and even worse, walking into the wrong classroom. Another piece of advice is to try out any activities that sound interesting to you. Whether it be football, or joining the conspiracy theories club, explore your passions and take advantage of your opportunities. If it doesn’t work out, at least you can say you tried. Another vital thing I wish I knew is that education comes first, and you need to remember that. It’s above relationships, above friendships, above everything. More so, do not procrastinate, I repeat, do not procrastinate. Do your homework, assignments, and projects on time, it’s self explanatory. The longer you wait to do something, the harder it gets. More into that, you need to do your best. Sure, one bad grade or one failed class isn’t going to determine your future, but it’s important to do your best and stay on track. You might not think it matters now, but 4 years later when you’re putting in college applications, you will realize how much it does. If you do happen to fall off track, make sure you get back on. Finally, the most important piece of advice to you is to just enjoy high school. It goes by in the blink of an eye, and before you know it, its over. These next four years will be some of the best and worst of your life, but there's a whole world waiting for you after high school. Stay true to yourself and you’ll be okay. By: Brennan Robinson
What are you, a freshman now? Well, there are four years in high school, and the most important years are your Freshman year, and your Junior year. However, that doesn’t mean you should slack off your Sophomore and Senior year. Trust me high school, is harder than it sounds, I would know because I don't listen most the time. Working hard will pay off if you start from Freshman year. One piece advice I can give you is to be social it will help you in the long run. If you’re the kind to goof around, use it as an advantage. Get a group chat specifically for homework so if you don't have a clue or know the answers to a paper, maybe someone else can help. Just don't limit it to your close friends, try to reach out to those who can really help you with school. Those will be the ones to stick around as you grow wise throughout high school. Also, set a deadline to your life goals around the end of Sophomore year, because come Junior year when you don't know what you want to be, it’ll make it difficult for you to pursue a successful career. In high school, getting into sports can open up doors to college and other future benefits. Be aware that you will be more of a target to teachers. They tend to look out for you by getting on your case when you talk to much, or act out in class. Most of all, you just have to have your own uniqueness, step out of your shell for a bit; try out different and new things. It could lead to new faces, opportunities, etc. You want to be known by peers in a good way, and you’ll see that it’ll make these last four years great. Surround yourself with your friends, but don't do what they do unless it is good for you. Most importantly, these years fly by fast so cherish it, make memories, break achievements, and graduate on time. In Too Deep
-Jordin Jennings Why do I stay when I can go? The pain could all end, and the fighting could stop! I could spare the hurt and start off fresh But instead I stay and further the mess. I get more and more tangled in vhis strings when the pain is neverending. Why do the words, "I love you" make up for the bruises? Why do a few good times ever overcome the blood I wipe from my face, When you're mad? Why do you treat me like trash when you're with your friends? And why can't I have any of my own? Do you think I'll finally wise up and leave you. These games you play are so confusing! Sometimes it's like you're a whole other person You tell me you love me, and it won't happen again... Until it does! You tell me I mean the world to you, and that you can't live without me... But I'm not living when I am with you. This pain I fell... the hurt you cause the scars I have! They can't always be covered by some make-up and a smile! The words you scream the pain enflict I'm not sorry but it has to quit! It's time I start putting my life before your happiness and I tale care of myself. Before you beat me until I'm gone for good. Spring
-Kevin Catalan Spring is here and it's about time I see the positivity set free, the despair let loose and smile. Yeah, these allergies still torture me and I'm still sniffing constantly, but smiling seems nice. Just seeing cherry blossom petals fly by, The brilliant colors in the sky. I've consumed so much time just looking at it. It's all hours passing by. The beautiful flowers growing from the cracks in the sidewalk. Just breathe, And it's all so beautiful, from the grass on the floor to the trees growing leaves, the flowers of the cactus all the way to the sparkle in your eyes. Everything is finally fine. |
