Posted: November 9, 2017 When we think of drugs, we think about all the bad, life-altering ones. Most of the time, we don't think about the drugs that are there to help us. Yet, those drugs can also be used in a way that can ruin your life. Opioids fall into this category. They are used in the medical field to help with pain, but if the user gets addicted, their life can fall to pieces. Opioids are like pain-relievers that come in the form of tablets, capsules, and liquids. They work by attaching to the receptors on nerve cells, and block pain signals. However, if the drug is abused or taken for long-term, the user can become addicted and physically dependent on the drug. As a result, it would be significantly harder to quit the drug, especially because the addict will suffer withdrawal symptoms. These include; night sweats, nausea, vomiting, pain in the muscles, depression, agitation, paranoia, and delirium. There is also a chance to overdose on opioids. Luckily, there is an antidote that reverses the effects of opioid overdosed called Naloxone. Taking these drugs can have a major negative impact on your life. Martin Hernandez ,12, has not used opioids before, but knows their purpose. “I know that opioids can help relieve pain but I do not use it. Although the topic is interesting to me because they have an antidote to the drug. I think they should only prescribe [them] to patients that hold any severe conditions. That way it can decrease the overdose count and possibly help those that are already addicted.” Overall, Opioids are used to relieve pain they can cause addiction, if abused. The drug comes to prove that, good or bad, addiction can come about. Most, if not all, of the users are informed of the drug and its purpose. If the user were to overdose, an antidote called Naloxone can reverse it’s effects. Although, if the users are informed of the dangers of the drug, the abuse of opioids can be diminished.
